Orphanage Internship in Ghana

As the local orphanages in Ghana are lacking funds and basic facilities, Helping Abroad is helping them to provide orphans and destitute children with basic facilities and care. Interns in the Orphanage internship program help these children to grow in safe and healthy childhood.

As an intern in orphanage programs run in the two of the townships-Accra and Kumasi, you will get involved in teaching English among other subjects, interacting and involving children in creative, fun, learning, musical and sport activities. Interns will also help orphanage administrations with fundraise, office works and awareness programs like healthcare and sanitation.

Orphanage programs in Ghana are equally important to interns as it is for the children. Involvement with orphanage programs as an intern is one of the most effective ways to make direct impact to the country of Ghana and its children. English Teaching Internship in Ghana

Being a global means of communication, communication skills in English language is the one of basic requirements for landing better jobs and educational opportunities in Ghana. In the changing concept of globalization, tourism and international trade relations, many of the local children from local income families are being deprived of English learning and in-turn are missing the hope for future job prospects.

As an English teaching intern in Accra and Kumasi region of Ghana, you will teach English to the kids of local schools that lack funds and proficient English teachers. Apart from English teaching, you can also teach other subjects, extracurricular activities and help school teachers and administrations with curriculum, fundraising and administrative tasks as per your interests and skills.

Education Requirements and Project Skills:

Apart from basic knowledge of communicative English, you don’t need to have other skills or qualifications to apply for English teaching internship programs. Supervision and Field Support

The interns in the internship project will be guided and supervised by an experienced and qualified supervisor. Usually the head of the project will be mentoring the interns throughout the internship duration, guiding them professionally towards the completion of the project. Depending on the qualification and time allotted for the project, interns may be required to pay an additional supervision fee of $25-$50 per week to the supervisor.

College credit for internship project in Ghana

Please note that Helping Abroad does not provide college credits for internship project. Our local office or your supervisor can give you a letter verifying the duration and project of your internship. If you need college credit for your internship, please contact your own university or college. You can also talk to your professor.

Room and Food

Mostly, interns in Ghana will be staying in a home base, which is a permanent resident for volunteers and interns of Helping Abroad. The home base is located at a safe and clean neighborhood with easy accessibility to internet cafes, supermarkets, restaurants and bus stops. The rooms are comfortable, with several bedrooms having basic amenities, shared kitchens, shared bathrooms and a television for the interns. Bedrooms are generally shared with interns of the same gender. Furthermore, if the influx of interns is, high, they may even be placed with host families in simple houses at safe and clean neighborhood. Host families for Helping Abroad are well screened and are respectable community members.

Interns will be provided with meals three times a day (local food). Interns who require vegetarian food should specify it while filling up the application. However, other snacks and drinks outside the meal times will not be included. Orphanage Interns can stay in the orphanages as well, as these orphanages have extra rooms set aside for interns and volunteers, which are usually shared with other interns or volunteers.

Free Time

The Internship does not require interns to get involved in work 24/7. They will have free time in their hands during the evenings and during weekends, which they can use for interacting with other interns and visiting local areas nearby. Interns can go for city excursions and visit museums in the city of Accra or visit forts in Kumasi. They can also choose to visit monkey sanctuaries or go for mountain biking, or also visit drumming schools, community based eco-tourism projects, the Volta river, pottery villages, etc.
